Immortal legend: Rani Laxmi Bai

Rani-Laxmi-Bai

Rani Laxmi Bai Also known as Jhansi Ki Rani was an important and leading figure of Indian Rebellion of 1857. She was opposed to the British Rule in India and fought bravely for the India’s independence.

Laxmi Bai was born on 19 November 1828 in a holy town of Varanasi into a Kshatriya Maratha family. She was named Manikarnika and was nicked name as Manu.

Her parents were from the state of Maharashtra. She was very youthful when she was a kid. She used to play with her friends and was very helpful in nature. She was very happy go lucky girl.  She was called Chhabili for her sporting and playful nature.

She got education on her own home. She was very independent from her childhood days. She learnt horse ridding and she also she went on to learn how to use sword at such young age.

In 1842, she was married to Maharaja of Jhansi – Raja Gangadhar Rao and afterwards she came to be known as Laxmi Bai. After her marriage she gave birth to a baby boy called Damodar Rao but the boy died very soon. So Raja Gangadhar Rao adopted another kid who was the son of his own cousin. Raja Gangadhar named him again Damodar Rao.

A British political officer had witnessed the event by which Damodar Rao was adopted as the son of Raja Gangadhar and Rani Lakshmi Bai. Meanwhile the king had also requested the British officer to hand over the government of Jhansi to the Lakshmibai for the rest of her life in an official letter. Also the king had asked the British rulers to treat his adopted son with full respect.

The Raja died in November 1853 and the British, under Governor General, Lord Dalhousie applied the Doctrine of Lapse, stating that they would not recognize the adopted child as the legal heir of the Raja and would hence annex Jhansi to British territory.

Following the death of Raja in November 1853, British East India Company had introduced a new law Doctrine of Lapse framed by Governor General Lord Dalhousie. This new policy rejects the Damodar’s claim of his adopted son will get the ancestral property. Also this law stated that Jhansi would not be annexed to British territory.

Soon, Laxmi Bai got a proposal from British Empire that asked her to leave the palace, as they claimed themselves to be the future inheritor of the said property.

She had not only rejected this proposal but in fact decided to launch a battle against the British Empire. She made a military group comprised of both men and women to support her fight against the British Soldiers.

It is then; Rani Lakshmi Bai had raised her voice and asked the Colonial rulers to go away. She fought against this ‘Doctrine of Lapse’ policy in a most valiant manner.

While fighting against such impartial and irrational policy, on June 18th 1858 Rani Laxmi Bai of Jhansi had to sacrifice her life in a heroic fight against the British soldiers in Gwalior.

India has many great freedom fighters who fought against the British Rulers and for India’s independence, but the name of Rani Lakshmibai will always hold a special place in history. She has been the prolific freedom fighter, a brave and fearless woman and also a queen of the princely state of Jhansi in those days.
